eCLOSE: Intro to Research In eCLOSE: Intro to Research , summer student scientists will learn techniques and protocols to examine how nutrients can affect the development of The Fruit Fly. They will complete more advanced techniques like solution-making and micropipetting! Participants will put hand-eye skills to the test as they move napping fruit flies for sorting! Scientists will collect REAL-TIME data and present their findings to their colleagues! This FULL day program splits time between Introducing early scientists to fly research AND a Specialty! After registering for this session, complete the registration for biochemistry, behavioral science, or sports-and-nutrition!! Select your specialty at the end of the registration process. Behavior Summer student scientists will continue working with The Fruit Fly, but this time through behavioral observations! Are you interested to see how diet may affect behavior? This is the lab@home for you! Techniques and protocols will still be used to examine the effects that nutritional supplements have on fruit flies, but this time we will be doing behavior techniques to examine reactions to scents or discomfort, and impacts on locomotion, and more! Biochemistry Summer student scientists will continue working with The Fruit Fly, but NOW at the macromolecular level! Have you wondered where biology and chemistry intersect? This is the lab for you! Techniques and protocols will still be used to examine the effects that nutritional supplements have on fruit flies, but this time we will be doing “wet lab work on the bench”! Join us as we measure lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins!! Sport and Nutrition Summer student scientists will continue working with The Fruit Fly to examine the impact of nutrition on behavior and body chemistry as they relate to sports! Techniques and protocols will still be used to examine the effects that common (junk) foods have on fruit flies (AND YOU), and you will explore topics like calories and metabolic pathways that promote energy!

I thought it was really great and everyone was really helpful. I felt that I could collaborate with everyone and grow as a scientist.
eClose programming was a very fun and educational experience. I like how it was hands on, and we got to work with others. This gave us the opportunity to meet new people and build our teamwork/social skills.
The eClose program was an amazing experience that had me think and dig a little deeper into thought.
I think it was great, it was very informative and made me feel welcomed into the science community.
Please contact eCLOSE Institute if you have any questions.
